How to Extend Field Lengths

Question:

How can I extend the field lengths in the database structure of Tele-Support HelpDesk?

Answer:

You can extend the field lengths by directly editing the field(s) in either Microsoft Access or SQL Server's Enterprise Manager, depending on the type of database your Tele-Support Helpdesk installation is connecting to.

Note the following:

  • NEVER make the field smaller in length.
  • NEVER change the field TYPE.  Changing the field type can disable your application.  In addition, changing the field type can very easily delete all of your data for the given row (i.e. not all fields types are interchangeable).
  • When you apply any Updates/Upgrades, the database structure will revert back to the standard field lengths.  To avoid loosing data that may exceed the standard length, you should edit the field lengths in the blank mdb that is supplied with the update/upgrade application or use the attached.  After the field lengths have been edited in the blank mdb, then proceed with your update/upgrade.  BE SURE you have a SAFE and VALID back up before you apply any changes.
  • Extending the size of some fields may not allow you to enter a larger amount of information in Helpdesk.  There are some places where the HelpDesk application will not allow you to enter larger field values even though you have altered the database to allow it.
  • Support may be limited on database structures that have been altered.  Any changes made to the database structure are done SOLEY at your own risk.
