V2QA000010 How To Rebuild & Compact Database
Question:
How do I repair my HelpDesk.mdb
Answer:
Repair TSHD Files (Helpdesk.mdb) Using MS Access:
This is the preferred method for repairing the Helpdesk.mdb file. Rename Helpdesk.mdb to helpdesk_old.mdb. Run MS Access. Go to Tools|Database Utilities|Compact and Repair Database. Select heldesk_old.mdb as the Database to Compact From. Enter Helpdesk.mdb as the Compact Database Into. The destination, Helpdesk.mdb, is typically located in the Server sub-directory.
NOTE: If you are using MS Access 2000 and have not converted Helpdesk.mdb, you will have to convert it first. See conversion instructions below.
Rebuild TSHD Files (Helpdesk.mdb) Using ODBC. Only use this method if you are getting ODBC errors.
Since we use ODBC drivers, you can rebuild/repair though Windows.
Click on Start|Settings|Control Panel|ODBC Data Sources (Start|Settings|Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Data Sources (ODBC) on WinNT or Win2K.) Double-click on the Helpdesk DSN. Verify the Helpdesk.mdb database path and click on Repair.
Caution in this area! Deleting or changing files may impact Windows or any other programs using these drivers.
Convert TSHD Files (Helpdesk.mdb) to MS Access 2000:
Rename Helpdesk.mdb to helpdesk97.mdb. Run MS Access. Go to Tools|Database Utilities|Convert Database|To Current Access Database Version. Select heldesk97.mdb as the Database to Convert From. Enter Helpdesk.mdb as the Convert Database Into. The destination, Helpdesk.mdb, is typically located in the Server sub-directory.
NOTE: Ensure that all users are logged out of HelpDesk before attempted to rebuild/repair database. Also be sure you have a clean back up of your helpdesk.mdb incase you have to restore.
HelpDesk.mdb should be maintenanced at least once every two weeks to keep the indexes and orphan records cleaned up.
Applicable HelpDesk version(s):
2.0 / 2.1
....Note for 2.2 users....the above instructions are compatible or you could run your rebuild/repair direct through the Admin Tools.
