GEN0000043 UNC Names and RegTSHD
Question:
How can a find the UNC path to my helpdesk server?
Background:
A UNC (Universal Naming Convention) name is one that contains a computer name and a resource name in the following format: "\\Computer Name\Directory Name\". For example, my computer is named "Support" and I have a shared directory named "Testing". In this case, the UNC name would be "\\Support\Testing".
Answer:
The combination of the computer name and shared directory will be the UNC name that you need to send to Resource Dynamics.
First you Need to find the computer name - This can be quickly found by right clicking on My Computer - Properties - Computer Name - Locate Full Computer Name (this may vary depending on which O/S you have)
Second you need to make sure the folder that you have installed the HDServer to is "shared" - This can be done by locating the folder - right click - Properties - Sharing.
Third you should now be able to translate information to UNC format - Two ways this can be done:
- From the Windows Explorer ADDRESS bar - enter \\computer name\shared folder and enter - this should take you to the folder.
- From My Network Places - Open or double click - select and open Entire Netowrk or Computer's near me (this will vary depending on which O/S you have) - open Microsoft Windows Network (this will vary depdning on which O/S you have) - locate and open the "shared" folder - the UNC information should now be displayed in the ADDRESS bar.
