What MDAC Version do I need

Answer:

It has come to our attention that under some circumstances a version of  the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), which are used by HelpDesk to access databases, can be overwritten with an older version.  It is important to remember that if you experience any problems with HelpDesk after installing another software package, you should verify that the version of MDAC 2.6 is  installed on your machine.  Microsoft has generously released a product that can assist you in determining if your MDAC is out of date.  This product, Component Checker, can be downloaded from http://download.microsoft.com/download/dasdk/install/1.0/WIN98/EN-US/cc.exe.  This product will run on any version of Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, or Windows 2000.

MDAC 2.5 SP 2 RTM is available for download from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm.

NOTE: Make sure that you are logged in as Administrator on Windows NT and Windows 2000 before installing MDAC.  

The Microsoft Jet Engine 4.0 OLE DB Provider is not included with the MDAC 2.6 RTM.  If you do not have this provider, you may download it from Microsoft from the following links:

For Computers That Are Running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

Use Jet40SP5_9xNT.exe to install Jet 4.0 SP5 on computers that are running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0.

For Computers That Are Running Microsoft Windows 2000

Use Jet40SP5_W2K.exe to install Jet 4.0 SP5 on computers that are running Windows 2000. http://download.microsoft.com/download/access2000/SP/4.0/NT5/EN-US/Jet40SP5_W2K.exe.

For Computers That Are Running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Use Jet40SP5_Me.exe to install Jet 4.0 SP5 on computers that are running Windows Millennium Edition.

NOTE: There have been problems reported with MDAC 2.6 (and above.)  Currently, we recommend that you install MDAC 2.5 SP 2.  There is no need to install the Microsoft Jet Engine 4.0 OLE DB Provider with MDAC 2.5 SP 2 since it is included with this particular package.
